How Kidney Transplant is Performed
Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure performed to replace a diseased or failing kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. Common reasons for undergoing a kidney transplant include end-stage renal disease, chronic kidney failure, or certain kidney-related disorders. Patients with kidney failure experience symptoms such as fatigue, swelling, difficulty concentrating, and decreased urine output, impacting their quality of life. In Turkey, kidney transplants are conducted at state-of-the-art facilities by experienced surgeons, offering world-class medical care at a fraction of the cost compared to North America.
The most common techniques used in kidney transplant surgery include:
- Living Donor Transplant: In this technique, a healthy kidney is donated by a living donor, often a family member or close friend.
- Deceased Donor Transplant: In this method, a kidney from a deceased donor is procured and transplanted into the recipient’s body.
- Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy: This minimally invasive technique is used to remove the donor’s kidney, resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery for the donor.
How it Works
During a kidney transplant, the diseased kidney is removed from the recipient’s body, and the healthy donor kidney is transplanted into its place. The surgeon connects the blood vessels of the new kidney to the recipient’s blood vessels and attaches the ureter of the new kidney to the bladder. Following surgery, patients are closely monitored in the hospital for several days to ensure the transplanted kidney functions properly. Pre-operative instructions may include undergoing medical tests, discontinuing certain medications, and following dietary restrictions. Post-operative care involves taking immunosuppressant medications to prevent rejection, regular follow-up appointments, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
